Where do I type in what I want to find?
In the area where the grey words "搜索 books, 的文章, images, 和更多的...”出现. Click your mouse arrow in there 和 you will see the cursor begin to blink, then you can start typing in your search term(s).
What does the arrow pointing down next to "关键字" mean?
That arrow indicates that there is a list of choices, "关键字," "Title," or "作者." If you know that the search terms you want to use would be indexed as part of a title 或作者's name, you may specify that by choosing from the drop-down menu. The default is "关键字" because all indexed terms are considered keywords, meaning you'll get the most results to choose from. 
How do I search for 只是 articles?
If you want to search for a specific type of resource (like 只是 的文章, 只是 books), then your best bet is to use 高级搜索. When using advanced search, you can specify which types of materials you want to find -- all while still searching by keyword, title, 或作者. 
Why is there a link to "Go to 高级搜索 Instead?"

If you want to search by more than one parameter (say, title 和 author), 高级搜索 is your friend! 高级搜索 also lets you search for a specific type of materials, like articles or books, instead of searching for all types of materials. If you have a clear idea of what you want to find, using 高级搜索 can help you get to it faster. 

Why does the look of the page seem to change after I do a search from the search box on the 图书馆 l和ing page?

After you do a search from the search box, the discovery service that works behind that box automatically returns results in the 高级搜索 interface, so you can refine the results more efficiently. Our discovery service is run by EBSCO, a vendor for library databases 和 other materials.

When I do my search, I see a yellow strip across the top of the page, that says, "Hello, Guest. Login for full access.“那是干什么用的??

Because 中库 wants for 每一个人 to be able to use the discovery service (even if they aren't 素 students, 教师, 或员工), guest entry is provided by default. When you see the login prompt, this means that you are on guest access.

If you are a student, 教师, or staff 和 you've already authenticated through the my.素.edu portal, all you have to do is click the part of the link that says, "Login for full access.“那, a cookie is placed in your browser that carries your 素 credentials to items you find that are available only for 素 students, 教师, 和工作人员. If you haven't logged in yet, you will get the familiar 素 login, 和 you can authenticate then as well. 无论哪种方式, your 素 credentials grant you full-text access to a wide array of 的文章, 电子书, 和更多的.

To the left of the results, I see a bunch of check boxes 和 drop-down boxes with more check boxes, what it is all of that for?

The search box on the library homepage searches hundreds of different sources for your search terms. Because it searches through so many resources, the results you receive back are probably many, many more than you want or need! Those check boxes in the 高级搜索 interface are there to help you refine the results to focus on the ones that are most relevant to you. While many of them are self-explanatory, check the Help link in the upper right-h和 corner for in-depth explanations of tips, 技巧, 和 shortcuts in the 高级搜索 interface.

What are some basic searching tips?
  • To get the most accurate results, put your search terms "in quotation marks."
    • 例子: “国家公园”
  • Use the Boolean operators AND / OR to create searches.
    • 例子: “国家公园” AND "Utah"  will produce results that include both "national parks" 和 "Utah" as keywords.
    • 例子: “国家公园” AND "Utah" OR "Colorado" will produce results that include both "national parks" 和 "Utah" or "national parks" 和 "Colorado" as keywords. “国家公园” AND "Utah" AND "Colorado" would produce results that include "national parks," "Utah," 和 "Colorado" as keywords.
  • If you already know the title 和 author of the resource you're looking for, use 高级搜索 和 search by both title 和 author. Basic 搜索 (what you see on the library homepage) only allows you to search by one of those terms at a time.
